Aid Application Deadlines

For submission in 2016-2017 (awards for 2017-2018)

NOTE: Applications that have a deadline date "to NELC" are vetted by the department before being sent to the Dean of Students Office. Please be sure you adhere to this internal deadline, not a deadline you might see elsewhere or one mentioned by a student in another department. Information about applications can be found on the Humanities Division Website or the 2017-2018 Humanities Division Fellowship Guide.

All applications should be submitted electronically.  Applications due to NELC should be emailed to amanday@uchicago.edu; applications due to the Dean of Students in Walker 111 should be emailed directly to humdos@uchicago.edu.

Stuart Tave Teaching Fellowships

Purpose: provide funding for students to teach a course of their own design in the College
Qualifications: ABD by January 31, 2016; one completed, approved dissertation chapter.
APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO NELC by JANUARY 11, 2017.  

foreign language and area studies (FLAS) fellowships

Purpose: provide funding for students studying designated modern foreign languages
Qualifications: Scholastic Residence, US citizen or Permanent Resident.
APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO DEAN OF STUDENTS OFFICE by FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Dissertation completion Fellowships

Purpose: encourage completion of dissertation
Qualifications: must be admitted to candidacy before applying; must be no more than the 6th year of their program for the Mellon-University of Chicago; must be no more than the 7th year of their program for the Mellon-Humanities; must be no more than the 8th year of their program for all other dissertation year fellowships in 2017-2018; must not have held or currently hold an internal or external dissertation write-up fellowships (or whatever the title may be). Recipients who do not graduate by the end of Winter 2019 are ineligible for further University funding from any source, except conference travel reimbursement.

Ryerson Fellowship in Archaeology

Purpose: support students with travel/conference grants, pre-dissertation grants, or dissertation year completion fellowships. 

Qualifications: must be studying Greek and Roman art and archaeolgy. In the absence of qualified candidates who are studying Greek and Roman art and archaeology, fellowship funds will be available to graduate students who are studying Near Eastern art and archaeology.
APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO DEAN OF STUDENTS OFFICE by MARCH 27, 2017

Hanna Holborn Gray Fellowship

Purpose: encourage completion of dissertation (two-year award)
Qualifications: recipient must be admitted to candidacy by the end of Summer Quarter of the 4th year to hold the award
APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO NELC by FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Humanities dissertation research travel awards

Purpose: support for students financing their own dissertation research overseas
Qualifications: Funding from these grants is extremely limited, and students should first apply for travel grants from departments and centers.  Admission to candidacy before disbursement of the award. Begin research at location no earlier than the start of Summer Quarter 2016. Complete research at location no later than end of Spring Quarter 2017.

humanities conference grants

Purpose: support for short-term, research-related travel
Qualifications: Humanities Ph.D. students who present a conference paper.

FRANCE CHICAGO CENTER RESEARCH & TRAVEL GRANTS

Purpose: support for travel to and research in France for undergraduate and graduate students
Qualifications: For the Francois Furet Travel Grants, must be University of Chicago undergraduate, graduate, or professional school students; for the De la Vauvre Summer Research Fellowship, Graduate Students in the Division of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Harris School or Divinity School.
