Carol Fan received her PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago in 2021. Her dissertation explores the structure of the Mongol Empire (1206–c.1300), its unity, fragmentation, and continuity. Her research interests include Central Asian and Mongol history, Islamicate history of the middle periods, and cultural and economic exchanges across Eurasia. She is currently pursuing a translation project entitled “Chen Cheng: A Ming Diplomat to the Timurids and His Xiyu fanguo zhi.” She teaches the Reading Cultures sequence in the Humanities Core, Arabic language courses, a course of her own design on the Silk Roads history.
