Mustafa Kaya

Ph.D., University of Chicago, 2020
Teaching at UChicago since 2021

Mustafa Kaya completed his PhD in NELC with a dissertation on the life and work of a fifteenth-century Sufi-scholar of Herat. He is particularly interested in the Sufi networks (tariqa) of the post-Mongol era and how their emergence was related to the religio-political conditions of this time. More broadly, his research deals with religious movements, interpretive and intellectual communities, and their relationship with governments throughout Islamic history.  At the University of Chicago and elsewhere, he has taught courses on Islam, the Middle East, Arabic, and Turkish.
