Ahlan friends,

Join us on Friday April 28th at 3pm (Central Time) for the Arabic Circle in Pick Hall 218 or over Zoom:  tinyurl.com/arabiccircle

This week we are joined by Mohamed Sidi Mohamed, a Sahrawi resident in Spain and political activist and his sister Yauguiha Mohamed Embarec Alamin, an activist and leader of demining activities in the Western Sahara. They will deliver a talk titled:

Demining Western Sahara

The talk will be delivered in two parts. Part 1. will be delivered by Sidi Mohamed in Hassaniya Arabic (the dialect used by the Sahrawi population). It will cover the political and cultural context, sharing what the Western Sahara is and why it is relevant in the international context. He will talk about Sahrawi music and a Sahrawi artist that toured around the world with her incredible voice:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBJIJsK6zaU ; and finally, he will talk about the film festival that takes place in the Sahrawi camps in exile, which has the support of renowned actors such as Javier Bardem:  https://youtu.be/rlsivm3Yi-g.

Part 2. Delivered by his sister Yauguiha Mohamed Embarec Alamin, in fusha,  Arabic. Yaugiha was the first woman to be team leader of the demining activity in the Western Sahara and continues to play an active role in it. A documentary film about her life is currently being shot, and here is an article about her in an important Spanish newspaper: https://elpais.com/elpais/2018/05/08/planeta_futuro/1525770637_271824.html
